What controller would be best for PC games?

I bought Tomb Raider Underworld for the PC and it's impossible to use the keyboard. I'm a big PS player but I've also owned an Xbox so I'm not complaining if it's the better choice. What would the best controller be for this game? I own a Toshiba laptop and the game runs perfect, I'd need something to plug and play, I'm not that great at configuring things. Thanks
